Immunotherapy is one of the fastest-growing areas of new anticancer drug development in the last years.
It consists of administering specific drugs to stimulate or suppress the body’s own immune system and strengthen defense mechanisms, increasing its ability to fight cancer.
Lymphocytes, whose functions are to defend the body from infection, can also detect cancer cells and modify or prevent their development and dissemination.
The most commonly used types of immunotherapy are: lnterferons (alfa, beta and gamma), ciytokines (interleukina-2), vaccines and monoclonal antibodies.
